HUDSON, WI – Similar to the season-opening meet in Bemidji, MN, the University of Mary men's golf team overcame a slow start in Hudson, WI, to move up the leaderboard. The Marauders placed 9
th out of 13 teams behind a top-8 individual performance from senior
Gavin Argent.
After scoring 306 (+22) on day 1, UMary tallied a 300 (+16) in the second round. Argent had an excellent Tuesday, shooting a 72 (+1) to end with an overall score of 146 (+4). The team captain placed eighth overall individually.
"We haven't had that many top-8s, especially when our entire conference is at a tournament," said third-year head coach
Laif Olson. "Gavin [Argent] was eighth in the tournament and that's a big deal for us. He played well and he's just so steady. He's on the fairway all the time. He makes it easy on himself."
Following Argent was a slew of newcomers. Freshman
Quinn Breidenbach landed 40
th in the overall rankings with a 153 (+11) after shooting four over par on day 2. Junior transfer
Lucas Greenlun followed in 43
rd with a 154 (+12). Rounding out the team scoring was freshman
Lucas Schoepp's 156 (+14), as he moved up 14 spots in the standings on day 2.
"It was not a bad tournament for us but we can do better than that," said Olson. "This is my third fall of being the coach, and our team has gotten better each fall. Our expectations have changed. Two years ago, we would have been doing cartwheels with 306 and 300. We've got more talent now and our expectations are higher."
