BEMIDJI, MN – The University of Mary men's golf team showed significant growth in the second round of the 73
rd Bemidji State Invitational en route to a ninth-place finish. The 15-stroke improvement between rounds was highlighted by senior
Gavin Argent's even par second round, the third best score posted today.
The Marauders were tied with Alexandria Technical and Community College for the greatest day-to-day score improvement as they moved from 11
th to 9
th in the standings. The second round score of 298 was fifth on day 2 out of 12 teams.
"It was just getting another round of competition and shaking off the nerves," said third-year head coach
Laif Olson of the strong second round. "We had first day jitters. It was our first round of competition. We compete amongst ourselves in practice but yesterday was our first competitive round of the year."
Of the five starters for UMary (three of which were making their Marauders debut), four cut strokes off their round 1 score in the second day of competition. Olson sees that as a sign of things to come.
"I expect good things to continue," said Olson. "We practiced well. The guys played in a lot of tournaments this summer and had good success. I'm not surprised we played better today. I expected it. I'm pleased with a score under 300. We're in a good place to play some good golf this year."
Argent's even par round 2 was highlighted by a pair of birdies and an impressive eagle on a par 4 third hole. The senior's drive placed him 30 yards out from the green downhill. He was able to sink it on the next shot without seeing the flag.
Argent's 71 led the way in the second round as he was followed by freshman Lucas Schoepp (75),
Evan Booth (75), and debuting transfer Lucas Greenlun (77).
