BISMARCK, ND –
Maicee Burke posted a pair of goals in her first collegiate appearance and
Rachel Gensch added a goal and an assist as the University of Mary outpaced visiting University of Regina 4-1. With just five days of training in the books after opening fall camp on Monday, the Marauders scored a pair of goals in each half for the exhibition win.
Denied a pair of scoring opportunities early in the contest, the Marauders cracked the scoreboard first when
Sophia Lange found herself all alone atop the goal box on a feed from
Allison Lepp. After a quick touch, Lange buried the ball into the back of the net in the 43
rd minute.
Just 14 seconds later Burke gathered a ball from Gensch and tallied to give UMary a 2-0 lead entering intermission.
Burke took a feed from her sister Maliah Burke to open the second half scoring in the 66
th minute.
A goal by the Cougars closed the Marauders lead to 3-1 before Gensch pushed the UMary advantage back to three goals in the 83
rd minute.
The Marauders defense dominated the Cougars, allowing Regina just two shots in the game with both coming in the second half. UMary held a 22-2 edge in shots and a 10-2 lead in shots on frame. Additionally the Marauders triggered 13 corner kicks while the Cougars had none.
After playing a pair of scrimmages next weekend in California, UMary opens the regular season at MSU Billings on September 5 before hosting Emporia State September 15.
