BISMARCK, ND – A second straight impressive start from
Ryan Chamberlain combined with a big fourth inning carried the University of Mary to a 6-4 Senior Day win over visiting Southwest Minnesota State University. The victory not only earned the Marauders a series win but pushed UMary past SMSU in the Northern Sun standings.
After taking two of three games against the Mustangs and winners in eight of their last nine games, the Marauders improved to 22-21 overall and 18-15 in the NSIC. UMary is now 6
th in the league standings with one more win than SMSU, which is 24-19 overall 18-16 in the NSIC. The top eight teams in the final standings make the NSIC tournament, hosted by UMary May 8-11 in Bismarck and Mandan.
Chamberlain kept the Mustangs lineup in check all game and refused to allow multiple runners on base in any inning. No more than four SMSU hitters came to the plate in any inning until the ninth. Twice Chamberlain retired the Mustangs in order.
Pitching a season-high eight innings, Chamberlain allowed two runs, one in each of the seventh and ninth innings. The sophomore righthander from Laramie, WY, struck out eight, walked just one, and gave up six hits to earn a second straight win. He went seven innings a week earlier and allowed three runs in a 13-3 UMary win over the University of Sioux Falls.
The Marauders scored all the runs they needed in a 5-run fourth inning.
Noah Hull led off the inning with his 12
th home run of the season and the 30
th of his career over the right field fence.
Daniel Martin and
Kyle Jameson followed with run-scoring singles before
Kalem Haney roped a 2-run double to right center field.
SMSU got on the board with a leadoff home run by Max Kalenberg in the seventh inning. UMary got the run back in the eighth on a
Kalem Haney sacrifice fly. SMSU scored three times in the ninth but could never catch up in the final inning of the weekend as
Kayden Beauregard closed down the Mustangs rally.
Haney finished with a pair of hits and three RBIs out of the leadoff slot.
Carter Beck,
Ben Prediger and Martin also all had two hits. Beck scored a run, Prediger scored twice. Hull, Martin and
Kyle Jameson all had a run scored and an RBI.

The Marauders open a 5-game road trip at the University of Minnesota Crookston on April 30. The regular season concludes with a 3-game set at the University of Minnesota Duluth May 3-4.
