BISMARCK, ND – Playing at home for the first time this season, the University of Mary baseball team scored four times in the ninth inning but the Marauders furious rally fell just short in a 5-4 non-conference loss to Dickinson State University.
Taking advantage of two walks and a hit batter,
Kalem Haney roped a bases-clearing double to left field to close the gap to 5-3.
Michael Polson singled to right to score Haney to create a one run differential. Following a pitching change, a high pop fly off the bat of
Carter Beck was misplayed on the infield to put runners on the corner before a strikeout finished the game.
The Blue Hawks opened the scoring with a run in the first and a 3-run home run by Carlos Molina, Jr., in the 3
rd inning. Molina finished the day 2-for-4 with four RBIs to lead DSU.
A cavalcade of Marauders pitchers limited the Blue Hawks to one hit and no earned runs over the last six innings. UMary used seven hurlers in the contest and combined to strike out 13 hitters in nine innings and didn't allow a walk.
Jared Arnold struck out all three hitters he faced while
Konnor Kirchoffner,
Kevin Millar and
Kaden Moriarty each struck out two batters in one inning of work apiece.
Over the last six innings of work, the Marauders faced 16 hitters, just one more than the minimum. Over the last five innings UMary relievers faced the minimum of three hitters each time.
Daniel Martin led the Marauders offense with two hits, including a double. The UMary right fielder was also hit by a pitch and scored a run.
The Marauders return to Northern Sun play four games at #14 Augustana April 5-7 in Sioux Falls, SD.
