Blasts by Walker, Haney rally Marauders to split with Huskies

ST. CLOUD, MN – Big blows by Josh Walker and Kalem Haney combined with key bullpen contributions earned the University of Mary baseball team a doubleheader split at St. Cloud State University. The Marauders captured the second game of the day 12-6 after the Huskies, currently 4th in the NSIC standings, captured the opener 15-1.

GAME 1: SCSU 15 UMary 1
The opening game of the Northern Sun doubleheader started with great promise for the Marauders as leadoff hitter Michael Polson pulled a home run to left field off Huskies starting pitcher Luke Tupy. The SCSU lefthanded soon found his groove, striking out the next three UMary hitters and retiring nine straight batters.

The Huskies struck for seven runs in the third inning and five more in the fifth to pull away for the win.

Walker led the Marauders attack with two hits.

Tupy struck out ten hitters on the day in five innings. Cal James led the Huskies with four hits, scoring twice and driving in three runs.

GAME 2: UMary 12 SCSU 6
The Marauders bounced back in a big way to capture game two. A wild contest that featured two ties and two lead changes, the Marauders scored the last six runs of the game to earn a split on the day.

Behind a strong start from Alec Danen, the Marauders trailed 4-1 after five innings. The game changed dramatically as a grand slam by Walker capped a 5-run 6th inning to give UMary a 6-4 lead. The Huskies tied the game with back-to-back solo home runs in the 7th.

UMary regained the lead in the 8th inning on a 2-out jolt to left center by Haney as UMary regained the lead at 7-6.

A five-run 9th inning sealed the win for UMary. After a run-scoring doubles by Ben Prediger and Carter Shin, the Marauders tacked on three more runs with two outs without a hit, scoring one run when Haney was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, a passed ball and a wild pitch.

UMary closer Mark Schommer, who earned a win in his first collegiate start against Northern State on Wednesday, pitched a scoreless 9th inning for the Marauders, striking out two of the three hitters he faced.

Kayden Beauregard earned the win for the Marauders after pitching 1.2 scoreless innings of relief, retiring all five hitters he faced in the game.

Including six strikeouts by Danen, four Marauders pitchers combined to strike out 12 hitters in the game while walking just two.

Haney went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and four RBIs. Shin went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a pair of runs scored. Kyle Jameson scored three runs and had two hits.

James homered twice in the game for SCSU, scoring twice and driving in three runs.

The Marauders (14-18 overall, 10-12 NSIC) and the Huskies (20-13, 16-7 NSIC) wrap up the three game series with a single game Sunday, April 14. First pitch is 12 noon.
