WINONA, MN – A clutch relief outing by
Mark Schommer paired with a late rally lifted the University of Mary to a doubleheader split at Winona State University. The Marauders claimed the final game of the four-game Northern Sun series 9-6 after the Warriors captured the opener 9-1.
Schommer pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless relief to earn the win in the fourth and final game of the weekend. The senior entered the game with two outs in the sixth inning and the bases full. With three runs already plated and Winona State leading 5-3, a wild pitch by Schommer increased the Warriors lead to 6-3 before he retired the side.
Dylan Edmands homered for the Marauders (11-12 overall, 7-7 NSIC) in the bottom of the sixth to close the gap to 6-4. After Schommer struck out the side in the top of the seventh UMary erupted for five runs in the bottom of the inning.
Kalem Haney led off with a home run before
Carter Shin singled in
Carter Beck to tie the game. Edmands singled home a run before Danial Martin doubled in the fourth run of the inning. Haney capped the rally when he forced home a run a run after being hit by a pitch with the bases full.
Schommer then pitched two more scoreless innings to earn his first win of the season. He struck out five and allowed three hits and no runs.
Edmands was 3-for-5 in the game, scoring three times and driving in two. Haney finished with three RBIs and one run scored. Beck had two hits and scored a run.
The opener was a tight game through the first five innings. The visitors on the scoreboard despite hosting the contests due to inclement conditions in Bismarck, ND, the Warriors (12-14 overall, 9-7 NSIC) opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the third inning. A
Carter Shin solo home run in the bottom of the inning cut the Marauders deficit to 2-1. Winona State pulled away with two more runs in the sixth before tacking on five more in the seventh inning of a 9-1 Warriors win.
Jaxon Zanolli pitched the first five innings for the Marauders striking out five and allowing just three hits, a walk and three runs in five innings. Pierce Gritzmaker earned the win with a 7-inning complete game, striking out eight and holding UMary to two hits.
The Marauders return home to host Dickinson State University on Tuesday, April 2. Playing one 9-inning game, first pitch is slated for 12 noon at the Sanford Sports Complex adjacent to Legacy High School.
