WINONA, MN – A prolific University of Mary offense was limited to just three runs on the day as the Marauders dropped a doubleheader at Winna State University. In a Northern Sun series originally slated for Bismarck, ND, but moved to Winona, MN, due to weather issues, the Warriors claimed game one 8-1 and the second 8-2.
The Marauders entered the 4-game Easter weekend series ranked first in NCAA Division II in home runs per game and 10
th in runs scored per game.
Peter Tveite, the reigning NSIC Pitcher of the Week after throwing a perfect game in his last start for Winona State, kept the Marauders in check in the opening game. The Marauders posted four hits with
Carter Beck scoring the lone run on a
Krece Papierski ground ball in the fourth inning, pulling UMary within 6-1. Tveite struck out four and walked two for the win.
In game two the Marauders again fell behind by six runs before Eric Baptie singled home Danial Martin in the seventh. UMary scored its second run of the inning on a double play grounder with the bases full.
Baptie finished with two of the Marauders five hits. He drove in a run and stole a base. Beck was 1-for-2 with an RBI and also walked twice.
Paxton Miller pitched 6.2 strong innings for UMary. He struck out five and allowed just five hits and two walks while allowing four earned runs.
Mason Trocke had a double and a triple for the Warriors, scoring three times and driving in one run.
The Marauders and the Warriors close out the series Saturday, March 30. First pitch in the doubleheader is slated for 12 noon.
