Marauders overwhelms HWY 83 rival Beavers 80-47 to move into 2nd in NSIC standings

BISMARCK, ND – The University of Mary women's basketball team overwhelmed visiting Minot State University on both ends of the court in an 80-47 win over the Beavers to move the Marauders up another slot in the Northern Sun standings. Lexie Schneider, one of four Marauders to reach double digits in scoring against their Highway 83 rival, posted her 11th double double of the season.
 
UMary moved into a tie for second place in the Northern Sun with Southwest Minnesota State University, who the Marauders defeated on the road last weekend. The Marauders improve to 16-6 overall and 12-4 in the Northern Sun. Six games remain in the conference season.  
 
Filling all the categories, Schneider finished with 22 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals. She made 7-of-9 shots from the floor and was 8-for-11 at the line.
 
Megan Zander dropped four of the Marauders ten treys on the Beavers and scored 12 points. She also added eight rebounds, three assists and two steals.
 
Ryleigh Wacha had a fast start and just missed a double double with 11 points and nine rebounds while making three steals. Mariah McKeever chipped in ten points, six rebounds and five assists. Ashton Kinnebrew came off the bench to drill three of her five trey attempts and score nine points.
 
UMary finished 10-for-23 behind the arc.
 
Looking to complete a season sweep of the Beavers, the Marauders came out on fire. Wacha, with her sister Ashley a freshman on the Minot State bench, scored six early points as the Marauders gained a 12-5 lead. Mariah McKeever followed with a trey as the home team built a 10-point advantage. By the end of the first period the Marauders held a commanding 24-12 lead with Lexie Schneider producing eight points.
 
The Marauders defense continued to cause problems for the Beavers in the second period. UMary allowed just 14 points in the stanza. After building a 39-21 lead the Marauders took a commanding 42-26 lead into halftime.
 
Schneider took control in the third period, scoring 10 points as UMary grew its lead to 21 points at 61-39. Zander and Ashton Kinnebrew both hit treys to start the fourth, capping a 15-0 run as the Marauders kept expanding their advantage until the final whistle.
 
UMary shot 45.6% for the game while holding Minot State to 30.6% shooting, including a 4-of-18 effort behind the arc.
 
The Marauders dominated the boards with a 47-24 rebounding advantage.
 
Emily Srejma led the Beavers with 10 points.
 
The Marauders have another split weekend upcoming. On Thursday, February 8, UMary visits St. Cloud State University. The Marauders are back home Saturday, January 10, to host the MSU Moorhead Dragons. Tip off is slated for 3:30 pm at the McDowell Activity Center.
