Fouls, shooting woes cost Marauders in road loss to Huskies

ST. CLOUD, MN – Foul trouble and shooting woes were costly for the University of Mary women's basketball team in a 58-45 loss at St. Cloud State University.

The loss drops UMary out of a tie for second place in the Northern Sun with Southwest Minnesota State University (12-4 NSIC) into a 3-way tie for third with Northern State and Concordia-St. Paul at 12-5 in league play.

The story of the game was the NSIC's leading scorer and rebounder, Lexie Schneider, getting into foul trouble. Schneider recorded six points and three assists but only managed to play 17 minutes before she fouled out of the game.

Megan Zander had a productive all-around game as she scored 10 points while recording eight rebounds, three blocks and three steals. Moriku Hakim scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds coming off the bench.

Ryleigh Wacha had six points, four rebounds and three assists. Bergen Kinnebrew scored six points on 3-of-5 shooting from the field. Ashton Kinnebrew knocked down the Marauders only two three-pointers of the day as she recorded six points.

The first quarter was back-and-forth as both teams remained tied at 14 as the quarter came to an end. The second quarter saw the Marauders struggle with their shot as the Huskies took a 26-22 lead. UMary rallied back in the third quarter, cutting SCSU's lead to 36-35. The Huskies finished off the game on an 11-0 run with 4:37 remaining and would go on to win 58-45.

Free throw shooting played a big factor in the outcome as the Marauders shot 3-of-12 from the charity stripe. In contrast, the Huskies went 14-of-15 from the free-throw line.

UMary got outrebounded by SCSU 37-21. Turnovers were an issue for both teams as the Marauders had 21 turnovers while the Huskies committed 23 turnovers.
