ELKHORN, NE – In a game featuring three major momentum swings, University of Mary freshman
Carter Beck had the biggest game of his young career. After UMary won two of the first three games of the weekend, Minnesota State University used a fast start and a strong finish for an 18-8 win to leave the Marauders and the Mavericks with a weekend split.
Beck homered twice and drove in seven runs for the Marauders. The UMary outfielder was 3-for-4 and scored two runs. It was his second 3-hit game of the weekend for UMary. In six games this season Beck is 13-for-25 with two home runs, eight runs scored and 12 RBIs.
Two other Marauders (3-5 overall, 2-2 NSIC) also had three hits in the game.
Krece Papierski was 3-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs.
Michael Polson finished 3-for-4 with a home run.
Aidan Byrne paced the Mavericks (3-4 overall, 2-2 NSIC) attack with four hits in five at bats, scoring three runs and driving in three.
The Mavericks claimed an early 7-0 lead through four innings. A grand slam in the fifth inning by Beck and a solo home run by Polson close the game to 7-5. MSU tacked on another in the fifth before a 3-run shot by Beck in the top of the sixth knotted the game at 8-8.
Minnesota State snapped the tie in the sixth with a solo run before scoring nine times in the seventh to seal the Mavericks win and a weekend split.
The Marauders return to non-conference action with five games in Colorado. First up is a visit to the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs on Wednesday, February 28.
