ELK HORN, NE – A big blast by
Krece Papierski gave the University of Mary the fast start the Marauders needed in game two of a Northern Sun doubleheader to earn a split with Minnesota State University. After the Mavericks opened the day with a 13-5 win, the Marauders claimed an 11-6 victory in the night cap.
The Marauders (3-4 overall, 2-1 NSIC) have won two out of the first three games in the weekend series with the Mavericks. UMary and MSU close out the weekend Sunday, February 25, with a single game at 12 noon.
GAME 1: MSU 13 UMary 5
Scoring the first 11 runs of the game, the Mavericks evened the weekend series at one game apiece with a 13-5 win. Derek Kay hit a 3-run home run in the first inning. Louis Magers later hit a grand slam in the 4
th inning.
Dylan Edmands hit the first of four UMary home runs in the 5
th inning to put UMary on the board.
Noah Hull hit a 2-run home run in the 6
th inning and
Carter Shin and
Kalem Haney later added solo home runs.
Hull finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs. Edmands was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
In addition to hos grand slam, Magers allowed one run on four hits in five innings to earn the win.
GAME 2: UMary 11 MSU 6
In a reversal of the opener, the Marauders got off to a fast start to capture their second win of the series. Papierski blasted a 3-run home run in the first inning for UMary's first lead of the day. Haney and
Josh Walker doubled home runs in the second before Walker scored on a wild pitch to push the lead to 6-0.
A Kay 2-run home run provided MSU their first runs of the game but UMary score the next four.
Michael Polson hit a sacrifice fly in the third before Martin blasted a 3-run home run in the fifth to seal the win.
Paxton Miller gave the Marauders a strong effort on the hill, going four innings and striking out four. The senior allowed just two runs.
Kayden Beauregard and
Mark Schommer both pitched one scoreless inning of relief with both striking out two hitters.
All nine Marauders had a hit in the game with Walker producing two. Eight players scored a run with Haney, Hull and Waker crossing the plate twice each.
