JOPLIN, MO –
Kalem Haney opened the University of Mary baseball season in strong fashion, posting a pair of hits while driving in two runs against the University of Illinois-Springfield. The Prairie Stars broke open a close game late in a 13-3 win for UIS over UMary.
Haney finished two hits and two RBIs on the day in five plate appearances, including a triple.
Josh Walker had the Marauders other extra base hit in the game with a double. UMary had six hits total.
Down 2-0 entering the bottom of the third inning, UMary (0-1 overall) closed the gap in half as Walker scored on an error.
Trailing 3-1 in the 4
th inning, Haney tripled to right center to score
Daniel Martin and
Carter Beck to knot the contest at 3-3.
UIS (3-1 overall), who competed in the NCAA regional last season, scored single runs in each of the 5
th and 6
th innings before putting the game out of reach with a combined eight runs in the 8
th and 9
th innings.
In his Marauders debut,
Lukas Frers struck out four and allowed three runs in four innings.
Alec Danen then struck out three in three innings and allowed two runs.
Gavin Wahlbrink earned the win for UIS, allowing two earned runs in five innings.
The Marauders next face Northwest Missouri State University at 4 pm on Saturday, February 17, the second day of the MSSU on day two of the MSSU Lion Classic, hosted by Missouri Southern State University.
