CROOKSTON, MN – A dominant defensive performance by the University of Mary women's basketball team (5-3, 2-2 Northern Sun) led the Marauders to a 68-54 road victory over the University of Minnesota Crookston (4-6, 2-2 NSIC).
UMary held UMC to just 32.8% shooting from the field and 13.3% from three. The Golden Eagles came into the game averaging 71.3 ppg.
The Marauders held a big advantage in bench production, outscoring the Golden Eagles 35-10.
Moriku Hakim led all scorers off the bench with 13 points and 10 rebounds, earning Hakim her first double-double of the season.
Bergan Kinnebrew recorded 12 points and three steals.
Ryleigh Wacha had 11 points, four rebounds and four assists.
Chloe Pfau came off the bench to provide 10 points and six rebounds.
The first half saw UMary jump out to an early lead, but UMC continued to keep it close as the Marauders took a 30-27 lead going into halftime. An offensive explosion in the third quarter saw UMary outscore the Golden Eagles 28-13 to take a 58-40 lead. The Marauders closed the game in the fourth quarter to secure a 68-54 win.
UMary posted a 45.2 shooting percentage from the field and shot 6-of-20 from behind the arc. The Marauders went 6-of-9 from the free throw line, while the Golden Eagles shot 6-of-10 from the charity stripe. UMary edged out the rebounding battle 40-39 over UMC.
The Marauders stay on the road as they travel to St. Cloud, MN, to take on St. Cloud State University (5-3, 2-1 NSIC) on Tuesday, December 17, at 5:30 pm.
