TAMPA, FL – A last-second shot by
Bergan Kinnebrew in overtime lifted the University of Mary women's basketball team (3-2, 0-1 NSIC) to a huge upset victory 75-73 over the #8 University of Tampa (6-2).
After a late steal by
Eden Fridley with 30 seconds to go,
Bergan Kinnebrew let the clock run down before driving to the lane and finishing off the glass over the outstretched arm of her defender to give UMary a 75-73 lead with just five seconds remaining.
UTampa had a chance to tie the game, but an Audrey Ramsey step-back jump shot fell short, securing the Marauders' victory.
Kinnebrew scored 14 points to lead the team while also posting six rebounds and five assists.
Allison Undlin made her season debut, scoring 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting and grabbing five rebounds off the bench.
Ava Interrante had 10 points, four rebounds, and three assists.
Ryleigh Wacha had nine points on 3-of-5 shooting from behind the arc.
Chloe Pfau had eight points and four assists off the bench.
The Marauders trailed 33-29 to the Spartans after the first half. UMary rallied in the third quarter, shooting 5-of-7 from behind the arc to take a 53-52 lead going into the fourth quarter.
UMary fell behind UTampa 65-61 with just 2:56 minutes left. A jumper by Kinnebrew and a layup by
Anna Lenzen tied the game at 65-65 going into overtime. The game went back and forth in OT, but Kinnebrew's game-winner made the difference in the Marauders victory.
UMary shot 44.8 percent from the field and went 10-of-39 from three, while UTampa had a 41.7 shooting percentage from the field, shooting 7-of-17 from behind the arc. The Marauders shot 5-of-6 from the charity stripe, while the Spartans went 16-of-19 from the free throw line. UMary lost the battle of the board 36-30 to UTampa.
The Marauders return home to take on Minnesota State University Moorhead on Saturday, December 7, at 3:30 pm at the McDowell Activity Center.
