Late goals sink Marauders in loss to Wildcats

MANDAN, ND – The University of Mary owned the run of play for the first 78 minutes but could not crack the scoreboard in a 3-0 loss to visiting Wayne State College. The Marauders held decisive advantages across the stat sheet but it was three goals in the final 12 minutes by the Wildcats that delivered the win to Wayne State.

The Marauders slip to 8-4-3 overall and 6-3-3 in the Northern Sun. Wayne State improves to 6-5-5- overall and 5-3-4 in the NSIC. UMary entered the day 5th in the NSIC standings with 21 points. Wayne State has closed within two points of the Marauders with 19. The top eight teams in the final NSIC standings qualify for the conference tournament with the top four teams hosting a game in the first round.

UMary finished the game with a 22-13 edge in shots, a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal and generated 11 corner kicks to four for Wayne State.

The Marauders managed a handful of scoring opportunities in the first half, including a point-black shot by Rio Spruenken in the 21st minute that Wildcats goaltender Sidney Truman was able to turn aside to keep the game scoreless at intermission.

UMary poured on a flurry of shots early in the second, including a pair of scoring attempts off a corner kick in the 57th minute that resulted in a blast by Olivia Gardner off the crossbar followed immediately by a shot from Ava Vizenor in the box that was stopped by Truman, who finished the game with nine saves.

The Wildcats stunned the Marauders in the 79th minute when Paige Pemberton scored directly on a corner kick taken from the left side of the goal that settled into the right side of the netting. Less than two minutes later Alaina Sorensen scored the first of her two goals on a shot from distance to finish a counterattack. The Wildcats then tacked on their third goal in the 88th minute. With the Marauders adding goalkeeper Molly Fischer as an extra attacker on a corner kick, Wayne State countered off a deflection with Sorensen tapping in a goal.

Spruenken led the Marauders attack with six shots, including three on frame. Gardner, Amelie Faa and Maddy Barnick all had three shots.

UMary closes out the weekend with a visit from the University of Sioux Falls on Sunday, November 3, in the penultimate home game of the regular season for the Marauders. Game time is 1 pm at the MDU Resources Community Bowl. The Marauders wrap up the regular season Thursday, November 7, with a visit from Northern State University.
