BISMARCK, ND – The University of Mary earned a spot in the Northern Sun tournament for a seventh straight time after the Marauders downed visiting University of Sioux Falls 2-0.
Kendra Park and
Rio Spruenken both scored goals for the Marauders and a dominant defensive effort limited the Cougars to just two shots in the game.
The Marauders improve to 9-4-3 overall and 7-3-3 in the NSIC. With one game remaining in the regular season, UMary is tied for 5
th place with 24 points. The Marauders are still in the running for a top four finish in the league and a home game in the NSIC tournament. UMary needs a win in the regular season finale and losses by either St. Cloud State (26 points) or Augustana (27 points) to move up in the standings.
UMary closes out the regular season at home against Northern State University on Thursday, November 7. Game time is 5 pm at the MDU Resources Community Bowl. Northern State is tied for 7
th in the NSIC with 21 points and is looking to secure a spot in the NSIC tournament.
The Marauders generated several scoring opportunities in the first half. What first appeared to be a goal in the 18
th minute was wiped aside by an offside call. A short time later
MaLiah Burke ringed a shot off the crossbar and
Sophia Lange's follow attempt off the rebound was saved by USF goalkeeper Caroline Titze in the 30
th minute,
Park provided the Marauders with the lead in the 34
th minute. A feed from
Maddy Barnick led Park to the left side of the goal and the senior forward placed a perfect shot into the right corner of the net for the only goal of the opening half.
Spruenken doubled the Marauders advantage in the 83
rd minute to seal the win.
Tara Young played a ball from the far right side of the pitch into the top-center of the goal area. Spruenken one-timed the ball out of the air and into the net for her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
Molly Fischer made both of her two saves in the opening half of the game as the Marauders recorded their ninth clean sheet of the season. For Fischer, the senior now has eight shutouts this season after recording ten last year.
UMary again dominated the stat sheet, holding leads in shots (20-2), shots on frame (11-2) and corner kicks (8-0).
