Hard-fought match ends with Marauders falling to Warriors in five sets

BISMARCK, ND – In an exciting back-and-forth match, the University of Mary volleyball team (2-11, 0-5 Northern Sun) lost in five sets to Winona State University (25-19, 17-25, 27-25, 22-25, 15-13).

Three Marauders (Dani Highum, Charli Blackman, and Holli Klettheimer) reached double-digit kills against WSU. Maddy Freed set a new season and career high of 48 assists in the match. Kaia Sueker also recorded a season-high 23 digs.

The Warriors took down the first set 25-19. In the second set, the Marauders trailed 15-13 before rallying off nine straight points to take down the set 25-17.

The third set saw UMary take a 21-13 lead, but WSU made a huge rally and tied the set at 24-24. The Marauders took back the lead at 25-24 and thought they had the set won after a Warriors attacking error. The WSU coach challenged the call, and it was overturned into a kill and tied the set at 25. The Warriors went on to win the next two points to take down the set 27-25.

UMary held a big 20-13 in the fourth set, lead but WSU would again rally and take back the lead at 22-21. The Marauders showed grit and battled back as a block by Klettheimer sealed the 25-22 set victory for Umary.

The final set went back and forth, with both teams holding a lead. A kill by Quinn Robak would be the difference as WSU won 15-13 and took down the match 3-2.
