BISMARCK, ND – A tough battle ended in defeat for the University of Mary volleyball team (4-16, 2-10 Northern Sun) against the University of Minnesota Crookston (5-13, 2-8 NSIC) in four sets (25-19, 16-25, 26-24, 26-24).
UMary held leads in all four sets but was could only close out one of them. The first set saw the Marauders hold an 18-16 lead. UMC went on a 9-1 run to finish the set 25-19.
UMary responded by jumping out to a big lead in the second set and never relinquished it. A Golden Eagles attack error capped off a 25-16 set victory for the Marauders.
In the third set, UMary grabbed a 21-15 lead that would not last as UMC went on a 5-0 run to make it 21-20. The Marauders had two opportunities to win match point after holding a 24-22 lead but failed to do so, falling 26-24.
The fourth set went back and forth as both teams exchanged leads. With UMary winning 23-22, the Golden Eagles went on a 4-1 run to win the set and the match 26-24.
UMary had 43 kills on a .151 hitting percentage, while UMC had 58 kills on a .141 attack percentage. The Golden Eagles out blocked the Marauders 7-5.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Kaia Sueker had a season-best 26 digs.
Holli Klettheimer posted a team-best 11 kills to go along with five digs and three blocks.
Maddie Cooper had nine kills on an impressive .348 attack percentage.
Charli Blackman recorded a season-best 19 digs and eight kills.
Maddy Freed dished out 33 assists and seven digs.
Karina Hixon had a career-high 11 digs and three aces.
