Balanced attack not enough as Marauders fall in four sets to Mavericks

MANKATO, MN – A balanced attack for the University of Mary volleyball team (2-14, 0-8 Northern Sun) was not enough as the Marauders fell in a hard-fought four-set defeat (20-25, 25-16, 25-21, 25-16) to Minnesota State University, Mankato (13-3, 5-3 NSIC).

UMary had four student-athletes record at least eight kills against MSU. Gabby Caskey posted ten kills on an impressive .474 hitting percentage, while Reyna Isenbart recorded eight on a .421 attack percentage.

The Marauders came out on fire and took an 11-3 lead in the first set. A Charli Blackman kill off an assist from Maddy Freed clinched the set at 25-20.

The Mavericks responded with a dominant second set, winning 25-16. In the third set, UMary trailed MSU 17-11. The Marauders rallied back to win seven straight points to take a 18-17 lead. The Mavericks managed to regain control and won the last four points to win the set 25-21.  MSU grabbed a 16-7 lead in the fourth set and never lost momentum as the Mavericks would go on to win the match.

UMary had 41 kills on a .171 hitting percentage, while MSU recorded 57 kills on a .264 attack percentage. Both teams posted 20 errors over the four sets.

Gabby Caskey had ten kills and one block.

Maddy Freed led all competitors with 34 assists.

Maddie Cooper posted eight kills and two aces.

Kaia Sueker recorded the most digs (19) for either team.

Reyna Isenbart had eight kills while committing zero errors.

Holli Klettheimer had eight kills and two blocks.

Chloe Solheid posted ten digs.
