Clutch play on Senior Day earns Marauders 1-1 draw with Huskies

BISMARCK, ND – A pair of memorable moments by two of the nine University of Mary soccer players honored on Senior Day lifted the Marauders to a 1-1 draw against defending Northern Sun regular season champion St. Cloud State University. Ava Vizenor scored the lone goal of the day for UMary and goalkeeper Molly Fisher came up with a huge save in the final minute of play as UMary picked up a valuable point in the NSIC standings.

The Marauders are 5-2-2 overall and 3-1-2 in the NSIC, sitting in 5th place with 11 points. Three of the four teams ahead of UMary in the league standings have played one more game than the Marauders. SCSU is 6-2-3 overall and 3-1-3 in the NSIC (4th with 12 points).

UMary took advantage of a 9-2 edge in corner kicks in the game to score the first goal of the afternoon. Mo Malone served a corner kick from the right side of the net into the goal box. After bouncing off a couple players, the ball wound up on the foot of Rachel Gensch, the Marauders leading scorer. Her scoring attempt was deflected by a Huskies defender and ended up at the feet of Vizenor. Without hesitation the team captain roofed a shot high into the back of the net to give UMary a lead in the 23rd minute of play.

The Huskies found the equalizer in the 75th minute of a closely played contest. Taking a cross from the left side to the right of the goal box, Ellie Primerano sent a shot back to the upper left corner of the net to draw the game even at 1-1.

With the Marauders down a player after a red card in the 84th minute, Fischer came up with a spectacular save to preserve the tie. Following a blistering SCSU shot off the cross bar, the Huskies Gabby Zugel headed the rebound towards the UMary goal. Scrambling back to her feet after a diving save attempt on the previous shot, Fischer got back into position to make the save at the goal line with 64 seconds left in the game. Game officials stopped play for a video review to examine the scoring attempt and upheld the call of no goal.

The Marauders held a narrow advantage in shots (13-12) and shots on frame (8-6). SCSU was whistled for 10 fouls to eight for UMary.

Fischer ended the night with five saves while Meriel Orham posted seven for SCSU.

Gensch and Amélie Faa both took three shots for UMary with Faa placing two on frame.

The Marauders wrap up Parents/Family and Senior Weekend with a 12 noon game Sunday, October 13, against the University of Minnesota Duluth. It is the final home game for UMary before the Marauders embark on a four-game road trip before closing the regular season with three home matches.
