Lepp, Spruenken lead Marauders past Bulldogs 3-2 on Parents and Family Day

BISMARCK, ND – Allison Lepp and Rio Spruenken accounted for all the scoring for the University of Mary as the Marauders downed visiting University of Minnesota Duluth 3-2 on Parents and Family Day. Lepp scored a brace of goals and Rio Sprueken had a goal and an assist as the Marauders wrapped up a three-game home stand with two wins and a draw to move into third place in the Northern Sun standings.

The Marauders improve to 6-2-2 overall and 4-1-2 in the Northern Sun, moving into third place with 13 points at the midpoint of the NSIC season. The Marauders now hit the road for four straight games before hosting the final three games of the regular season.

The Bulldogs slip to 1-9-1 overall and 1-6-1 in the NSIC.

A tremendous individual effort by Spruenken delivered the Marauders a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute. Taking the ball from a Bulldogs defender, shielding off another defender before fighting through a tackle attempt, the UMary midfielder freed herself just inside the top of the penalty area and launched a shot into the right corner of the net for her third goal of the season.

Kendra Park set up the Marauders second goal of the opening half when the senior forward was knocked down by a UMD defender inside the 18'. Lepp stepped forward to take the penalty kick in the 37th minute and hammered the ball into the upper right side of the goal to send the Marauders into intermission leading 2-0.

UMary dominated the first half of play, holding the Bulldogs without a shot while taking eight (six on frame).

After the Bulldogs sliced the UMary lead in half in the 60th minute, Spruenken and Lepp collaborated to regain a 2-goal lead for UMary. Awarded a corner kick to the right of the goal in the 73rd minute, Spruenken served a perfect ball to the middle of the goal box. Lepp soared above everyone and redirected the ball towards the right post, glancing off a defender's head and the right side of the frame into the goal for a 3-1 lead.

UMD kept attacking and scored from distance in the 87th minute before UMary's defense locked down and protected the lead for the win.

The Marauders finished with a 17-6 edge in shots and a 12-5 advantage in shots on frame.

UMary opens a four-game road swing at the University of Minnesota Crookston on Friday, October 18, at 3 pm.
