MANKATO, MN – A fast start and impressive close earned the #15 University of Mary wrestling team a tough road victory as the Marauders rallied to defeat Minnesota State University, Mankato 24-18 in Northern Sun competition.
Jaden Verhagen (125) and #7
Reece Barnhardt (133) kicked things off in style for the Marauders. Verhagen defeated Lucas Ryan by a 19-1 tech fall at the 4:12 mark. Not to be outdone, Barnhardt won via a 19-3 tech fall over Andrew Weiss at the 6:23 mark.
Kaden Renner got UMary back on track after MSU won at 141 pounds. Renner defeated Isaiah Mlsna by a 15-1 major decision.
Following a pair of Mavericks victories at 157 and 165, #5
Max Bruss (174) gave the Marauders a 17-15 lead after he defeated Drake Hayward by a 6-3 decision.
UMary trailed MSU 18-17 after the Mavericks won at 184 pounds. A clutch performance by #8 Matt Kaylor pushed the Marauders back in front 21-18. Kaylor was dominant in his 12-2 major decision victory over Shane Gibson at 197.
In the final match of the night at 285, #7
Luke Tweeton secured the Marauders win with a narrow 2-1 decision over Tanner Gaffey, providing the final margin of victory.
The Marauders are now 6-3 overall and 2-1 in the Northern Sun. UMary's next competition is at home against in-state rivals Minot State University on Sunday, January 21, at 2 pm, in the Battle for the Barrel.
