KENOSHA, IA – In a matchup between two of the top wrestling teams in NCAA Division II featuring 12 nationally ranked wrestlers, the #15 University of Mary went on the road and split the ten individual matches against #4 Parkside. The homestanding Rangers earned a 21-17 Northern Sun win as four of Parkside's five wins came with bonus points attached to just one for the Marauders.
Three of the Marauders win came over ranked opponents. The headline UMary win of the night belonging to
Reece Barnhardt in the 133 pound match. Ranked 7
th in the country, Barnhardt used a pair of takedowns to overwhelm #4 Matthew Chi 8-2.
Braydon Huber and
Leo Mushinsky picked up the next two Marauders wins of the night while knocking off a pair of ranked Rangers. Huber earned a 4-1 decision at 157 in sudden victory over #12 Ben Durocher with a 3-point takedown in the first overtime session.
Mushinsky then knocked off #9 Brady Schuh 10-9 at 165 with a huge 3
rd period rally. Trailing 7-1, Mushinsky pulled even using an escape, a takedown and a 2-point near fall. Following an escape by Schuh, Mushinsky ripped Schuh to the mat again for a takedown and the winning points.
Following a pair of Rangers wins at 174 and 184, the Marauders captured the final two matches of the day. #8 Matt Kaylor ended the 197 match in just 3:50 with a 16-0 technical fall victory. #7
Luke Tweeton gave the Marauders their fifth win of the night with a 3-2 win at 285.
The Marauders are now 5-3 overall and 1-1 in the Northern Sun. UMary is next slated to compete at Minnesota State University, Mankato at 7 pm on Saturday, January 13.
