Marauders 5-game win streak snapped by visiting Vikings

BISMARCK, ND – Despite one more double double by Lexie Schneider and another scoring outburst by Mariah McKeever, the University of Mary women's basketball team's five game win streak crashed to a halt in a 68-62 loss to visiting Augustana. A big third period outburst by the Vikings proved too much to overcome.

Schneider led all players with 25 points and 15 rebounds for her seventh double double. The UMary post player tied her season-high in rebounds and has reached double digits in points in every game this season. The NCAA Division II leader for made free throws added another five to her total in six attempts. Schneider also added three assists.

Schneider pulled down her 800th career rebound in the game, becoming just the sixth player in program history to achieve that total.

Additionally she cracked 1,300 career points and now has 1,311. She is the 11th UMary player to break the 1,300 point barrier and passed Lauren Rotunda and Natalie Brunner during the game, both of whom scored 1,293 points in their Marauders careers.

McKeever added 16 points for UMary. The senior guard knocked home both her trey attempts in the game. She also had three assists.

Megan Zander added nine points, five rebounds and four assists.

Michaela Jewett led the Vikings with 23 points. She hit three treys and added eight rebounds. Aby Phipps had 16 points and 12 boards.

Down early, UMary used a 10-0 run to grab a 16-11 lead before finishing the first period tied 18-18.

The Marauders built another 5-point lead in the second quarter and went into halftime up 29-28.

In a decisive third quarter, the Vikings outscored the Marauders 23-15 to carry a 7-point lead into the fourth quarter.

A Schneider jumper midway through the final quarter pulled the Marauders within 55-52 but a Vikings 3-point play and a trey ramped the UMary deficit to nine. The Marauders closed within five but could get no closer.

The Marauders (10-7 overall, 6-3 NSIC) close out their home weekend with a visit from Wayne State College on Saturday, January 13. Game time is slated for 5:30 pm at the McDowell Activity Center.
