BISMARCK, ND – A dominant effort on both ends of the court earned the University of Mary women's basketball team a 73-40 victory over visiting Wayne State College. The Marauders trio of
Lexie Schneider,
Mariah McKeever and
Megan Zander combined for 49 points in the win.
Schneider, who surpassed 1,300 career points and 800 rebounds on Friday against Augustana, was virtually unstoppable. The senior post player scored 24 points, hauled down eight boards and had three steals and assists in the game. She was 8-for-10 from the field and made all eight free throws.
McKeever scored 13 points in 16 minutes, hitting two treys and going 5-for-6 at the free throw line.
Zander also hit two treys in the game on her way to 12 points. She also had two blocks on the night.
With Schneider scoring six points, the Marauders used a 10-0 run to claim a 10-2 lead. A trey my McKeever gave the Marauders their first double digit lead at 15-4. A 9-5 burst to finish the first quarter provided the Marauders a 24-12 lead and a double digit advantage that ballooned to 20 points in the second quarter.
After bringing a 44-27 advantage into halftime, the Marauders dropped the defensive hammer in the second half. UMary limited Wayne State to 13 points while scoring 29.
The 33-point win was the largest margin of victory in a Northern Sun contest for UMary since defeating MSU Moorhead 82-49 on December 2, 2021.
The 40 points allowed was the fewest by UMary since a 48-39 Marauders win over visiting Bemidji State University on February 4, 2023.
Carsyn Boswell led WSC with seven points.
The Marauders (11-7 overall, 7-3 Northern Sun) shot 50% for the game with a 7-for-18 effort on treys. UMary also knocked down 20-of-22 free throws. The Wildcats (4-10, 1-10) shot 31.4% and finished 1-for-12 behind the arc and 7-of-15 at the line.
The Marauders 4-game home stand continues when UMary hosts Winona State University on Friday, January 19, at 5:30 pm, followed by a visit from Minnesota State University at 3:30 pm on Saturday, January 20.
