SIOUX FALLS, SD – An impressive goal by
MaLiah Burke gave the University of Mary women's soccer team a second half spark but the Marauders could never find the equalizer in a 2-1 loss at Augustana in Northern Sun play.
Down 2-0 at intermission,
Mo Malone sprung Burke loose with a chip over the top of the Vikings defenders early in the second half. Burke outran Augie to the ball in the top of the penalty area and unleashed a withering blast from the middle left to the upper right reaches of the goal in the 54
th minute of play.
For Burke it was her second counter of the season. Malone, the Marauders all-conference defensive midfielder, now has a team-leading two assists and a goal.
The Vikings (4-3-2 overall, 2-2-1 NSIC) defense limited the Marauders (2-5-2, 1-3-1) opportunities throughout the remainder of the game.
Olivia Gardner had the Marauders last shot on goal but her effort was turned away by Vikings goalkeeper Jillian Barkus in the 88th minute. A subsequent shot by Amelie Faa following a corner kick went out right.
Fairly even statistically, Augie held the edge in shots (9-6) and shots on frame (6-3) while UMary had a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.
The Marauders remain on the road with games at the University of Minnesota Duluth on Friday, October 6, and at St. Cloud State on Sunday, October 8.
