Spruenken finds equalizer in Marauders 1-1 draw at UMD

DULUTH, MN – Taking advantage of a fortuitous deflection, Rio Spruenken knocked home a loose ball midway through the second half to lift the University of Mary women's soccer team to a 1-1 draw at the University of Minnesota Duluth.

Looking to score first, the Marauders twice hit the frame in the opening 16 minutes of the game. UMary  nearly took the lead in the 12th minute of play when Gardner fired a wicked shot from the top right of the goal box that deflected off the inside of the left upright. Just three minutes later Spruenken fired a shot off the crossbar.

After facing 11 shots from the Marauders in the first 30 minutes without allowing a goal, the Bulldogs opened the scoring with a goal by Jacqueline Jares in the 32nd minute. Initially placing a header off the right post, Jares pounced on her own rebound to score.

The Marauders made their own luck in the second half. Working her way into the right side of the goal box, Ava Vizenor fired a rising shot that UMD goalkeeper Jennifer Norris deflected off the crossbar. Spruenken read the rebound perfectly and knocked the ball off the end line into the net for the equalizer in the 64th minute.

Molly Fischer maintained the draw by making two of her six saves in the final 20 minutes. Norris also finished with six saves.

Spruenken finished with five shots and three shots on frame. Olivia Gardner added two shots on goal.

The Marauders held a 14-11 edge in shots with both teams firing seven on frame.

UMary wraps up the weekend with a visit to St. Cloud State on Sunday, October 8. Game time is 1:30 pm.
