ST. CLOUD, MN – The visiting University of Mary women's soccer team opened the scoring with a first half goal but a second half rally by St. Cloud State University lifted the Huskies to a 2-1 win over the Marauders in Northern Sun action.
Taking advantage of a breezy day with the wind to their backs, the Marauders (controlled the run of play in the opening half, holding a 10-3 advantage in shots and a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
Unable to find the net early despite four shots on frame and an
Olivia Gardner blast off the crossbar, the Marauders converted on a set piece to grab the lead in the 35
th minute of play.
Triggering a corner kick from the left of the goal,
Mo Malone served a perfect ball across the face of the goal. Reading the opportunity to perfection,
Ava Vizenor found her way to the end line and headed the ball into the net to give the Marauders (2-6-3 overall, 1-4-2 NSIC) the lead.
The goal was the first of Vizenor's career. The junior defensive midfielder from Big Lake, MN, also had her first assist this season.
Malone now has a team-leading three assists.
Now playing with the wind in the second half, the Huskies (9-2-1, 6-1-1) pulled even on a Brooke Quam counter in the 52
nd minute after she took a diagonal through ball that split the UMary defenders and free herself for the goal.
With time running down, Linsey Trapino scored the winner in the 85
th minute on a blast off her left foot from 20 yards out that sailed into the top left corner of the goal.
The win elevates the Huskies, who are receiving votes in the national poll, into first place in the NSIC.
UMary finished with the advantage in shots (11-10) and kicks (5-3). The Marauders were also whistled for more fouls (10-4).
After playing three straight on the road, the Marauders return home to host Bemidji State University on Friday, October 13, at the Sanford Sports Complex in the Annette Pierce Kick Cancer Game. Game time is 3 pm.
