Momentum shift costs Marauders in loss to Warriors

WINONA, MN – In a game of momentum, the University of Mary controlled the first half of game three in the Marauders weekend series at Winona State University. The Warriors found their stride in the second half to edge the visiting Marauders 6-3 and capture the rubber game of the series.

The Marauders took advantage of a pair of Warriors errors to score three times in the second inning with two runs scoring on groundouts and a third on an error. All three runs were unearned.

Carson Fagan, who earned a win earlier in the week while pitching five scoreless innings against Sioux Falls, pitched four innings Saturday against the Warriors. The freshman held Winona State to a single run on four hits and two walks.

The Warriors pulled even with two runs in the fifth before taking a 5-3 lead in the sixth on a 2-run single by Derek Baumgartner. Another run in the seventh built the Warriors lead to 6-3.

The Marauders had opportunities late, leaving two runners on base in the seventh and the bases full in both the eighth and ninth innings. For the day UMary stranded 14 baserunners.

Krece Papierski paced the UMary attack with three hits, scoring once. Five other Marauders also had hits.

Parker Wakelyn closed out the game for the Marauders (13-17 overall, 6-9 NSIC), striking out five without a walk and allowing one run in 2.1 innings.

Baumgartner paced the Warriors (15-18, 11-7) attack with three hits and four RBIs, doubling twice. Kyle Gendron struck out five in 3.0 innings of scoreless work to earn the win.

The Marauders are next scheduled to host Augustana on April 12. However field conditions may force a site reversal. Visit www.GoUMary.com for future updates.
