Fast start by offense, steller effort by Draheim earns Marauders split at Augie

SIOUX FALLS, SD – A quick start by University of Mary offense combined with another impressive turn on the mound by Jonathan Draheim earned the Marauders a Northern Sun doubleheader split on the road against defending champion Augustana. In a twin bill original scheduled for Bismarck, ND, but reversed to Sioux Falls, SD, due to field conditions, the Marauders claimed a 7-1 win in the opener. Down early in game two, UMary made a run at a sweep before Augie claimed an 11-8 win.

GAME 1 | University of Mary 7 Augustana 1
Early runs combined with a masterful performance on the mound by Jonathan Draheim earned the Marauders (14-18 overall / 7-10 NSIC) an impressive win to open their Northern Sun doubleheader with the Vikings (26-14/15-5). UMary claimed a quick 5-1 lead after two innings to pull away from Augie.

Draheim, who pitched the ninth complete game of his career, limited the Vikings to just five hits with only one double going for extra bases. The senior righty recorded just one strikeout but didn't walk or hit any batters. The lone run scored was unearned. He pitched three clean innings and only twice did he allow multiple hits in an inning. The victory was the fourth of the season for Draheim and the 14th of his career, pulling him within a win of the UMary career record of 15 by Ryan Astle.

The top of the Marauders lineup wore out the Vikings pitchers as the first four UMary hitters combined to score all seven runs. The quartet had six RBIs and finished 7-for-11 with a walk, double, triple and home run.

Kalem Haney was 3-for-4 in the leadoff slot and scored three times. Derek Shoen went 2x3 with a double, a run scored and three RBIs. Noah Hull hit the lone home run, had two hits and drove in three. Cal James crossed the plate twice.

PIVOT POINT
The Marauders offense took control early with three runs in the first and two in the second. After Augie went down in order in the top of the first, Haley singled and James was hit by a pitch. Shoen followed with a run-scoring single before Hull scored James on a sacrifice fly. A Krece Papierski single to left then scored Shoen with the third run. Augie scored an unearned runs in the second. UMary retaliated with a 2-out rally headlined by a 2-run double to left center by Shoen for an insurmountable 5-1 lead.

GAME 2 | Augie 11 UMary 8
In a reversal from the opener the Marauders got down early and valiant efforts to rally fell just short in game two the NSIC doubleheader. The Vikings scored three runs in the top of the first and built an 8-2 lead before the Marauders came storming back. A four spot in the 4th featuring a 2-run single by Noah Hull and a Daniel Martin solo home run and two more in the fifth on a Cal James double to left center allowed UMary to claw back within 10-8.

Both bullpens took control over the last four innings with Augustana scoring the only run in the seventh. The Vikings last three pitchers out of the six used in the game combined to hold the Marauders hitless over the last 3.2 innings, walking two and striking out three. UMary's final three pitchers out of the bullpen – Jared Arnold, Jayden Smith and Parker Wakelyn – allowed one run on two hits and two walks over the final five innings while striking out six.

Despite the dearth of hits over the last four innings, the Marauders kept pressing but stranded two runners on base in each of the fifth, sixth and eighth innings and one in the ninth. Overall UMary let 13 runners on base to six for the Vikings.

PIVOT POINT
Trevor Winterstein homered on the first pitch of the game as Augustana scored three in the first and four more in the second on 2-run doubles by Nick Banowetz and Jack Hines to claim an early 7-1 lead.
