James breaks career record for hits, doubles in series finale against Beavers

MINOT, ND – Cal James continued his assault on the University of Mary baseball record book, breaking two more marks as the Marauders finished their weekend visit to Minot State University. With his two hits on Sunday – both doubles – James is now the Marauders all-time leader in both categories. The UMary third baseman became the Marauders all-time leader in runs earlier in the week.

The Marauders, who swept a doubleheader of the Beavers on Saturday to claim a series win, was unable to pull off a series sweep as Minot State held off a late UMary rally to defeat the visitors 9-7.

James wasted no time in tying the record for hits and doubles in the first inning, hitting a run-scoring two-base hit before scoring on an infield single by Josh Walker to give the Marauders a 2-0 lead.

The Beavers responded by scoring the next eight runs over four innings to claim an 8-1 lead through five.

A native of Buffalo, MN, James etched his name into UMary's record book in the sixth inning. The Marauders third baseman doubled to left for his 190th hit and his 45th double, both UMary career records. He scored again on another hit by Walker, this one a double to left.

Andy Leer, a draft choice by the Minnesota Twins in 2010, previously held the Marauders career hit record with 189. Additionally Leer was the previous owner of the career runs scored record. Tyler Liffrig, the Marauders all-time home run record-holder, owned the doubles record with 44

After trading runs in the sixth inning, the Marauders scored twice in the 8th inning on a run-scoring triple by Walker and a Krece Papierski groundout. Kyle Jameson kept the Marauders hopes alive in the 9th with a 2-run home run that closed the gap to 9-7. Derek Shoen walked to bring up the tying run but UMary had no more magic.

James finished the game 2-for-5 with two doubles, two runs scored and one run. Walker went 4-for-4 with three RBIs and a run on a double and triple. Jameson scored twice and drove in two runs with a home run.

Matt Malone and Martin Rodriguez both had three hits for Minot State. The Beavers totaled 13 hits to nine for the Marauders.

The Marauders, now 19-26 overall and 12-18 in the Northern Sun, open up a 5-game home stand to close out the regular season with a double header against Bemidji State University on Tuesday, May 2. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 pm at Municipal Ballpark in Bismarck, ND.
