Records continue falling as Marauders overwhelm Beavers

BISMARCK, ND – A bevy of broken records and an avalanche of runs highlighted a University of Mary doubleheader sweep of Bemidji State University. Jonathan Draheim became the Marauders career leader in strikeouts and innings pitched in the 13-1 opening game victory. Cal James, who scored an incredible nine runs on the day, broke the season record for runs scored, Derek Shoen tied the single season record for hits and Josh Walker tied the single season record for runs batted in as UMary swamped Bemidji State 24-2 in the night cap.
 
The Marauders (21-26 overall, 14-18 Northern Sun) moved into 10th place in the conference standings and remain alive for the Northern Sun tournament as both Winona State (20-26, 16-15 NSIC) and Wayne State College (22-24, 16-16 NSIC) were both swept in doubleheaders on Wednesday. All three teams have three games remaining. The top eight teams in the standings qualify for the postseason. Additionally Concordia-St Paul (13-15 NSIC) and Upper Iowa (14-18 NSIC) are in the chase.
 
UMary hosts the University of Minnesota Duluth for two games on Friday, May 5, and a single game on Saturday, May 6, in the season finale. Game time for Friday's Senior Day contests is 1:30 pm. Saturday's first pitch is set for 12 noon.
 
GAME 1 | University of Mary 13 Bemidji State University 1
A week after setting the Marauders record for career wins with 16, Jonathan Draheim added another victory to his record as the senior right hander broke two more career records. The Jordan, MN, native limited the Beavers to one run on five hits in five innings. He struck out six and didn't walk a batter.
 
Logan Moser closed out the game, striking out four over two scoreless innings.
 
Cal James, Derek Shoen and Josh Walker led a 16-hit attack. James was 4-for-4 with four runs scored. Shoen hit the Marauders lone home run on the day and finished with three hits, two runs scored and four RBIs. Josh Walker had two hits, including a double, scored twice and drove in four runs. Krece Papierski chipped in three hits and two RBIs. Seven players had hits and eight scored runs.
 
PIVOT POINT
The Marauders started fast, scoring five runs in the first inning and all with two outs. Kyle Jameson was hit by the pitch, moved to third on a single by James, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Noah Hull. Five straight 2-out hits by the Marauders included a Josh Walker double to score James and run-scoring singles by Papierski, Daniel Martin and Kalem Haney.

GAME 2 | Marauders 24 Beavers 2
Cal James and Kyle Jameson scored five runs each, Derek Shoen and Josh Walker both scored three times as the Marauders overwhelmed the Beavers 24-2. Ten different players scored for UMary and 11 had hits in a game in which the Marauders scored multiple runs in each of the first five innings and at least once in all six.
 
Paxton Miller was solid on the hill for UMary. He limited the Beavers to two runs in five innings. The Bismarck, ND, native struck out five and walked one. He allowed the leadoff hitter to reach base in four of his five innings but stranded those leadoff runners on base without scoring three times.
 
PIVOT POINT
The Marauders broke a 2-2 tie with six runners in the bottom of the second inning. Cal James and Krece Papierski led the outburst as both had 2-run singles. UMary tagged on five runs in the third, three in the fourth and seven in the fifth.

Cal James broke the school record for runs scored in a season with 61. Steve Laasko held the record with 56 runs scored in 1998… Derek Shoen tied the single season record for hits (68) owned by Derek Ihde (2002) and Michael Feldman (2008)… Josh Walker tied the single season record for RBIs (51) set last year by Derek Shoen. Shoen is one behind the record with 50 this season.
