Record breaking day by Draheim, James plus clutch blast by Haney leads Marauders to sweep of Wolves

BISMARCK, ND – Playing on their home diamond for the first time this season, the University of Mary baseball team put on a memorable show to sweep a Northern Sun doubleheader for the first time. Jonathan Draheim and Cal James both broke Marauders career records in a 16-3 UMary game one win over Northern State University. Kalem Haney rocked Municipal Ballpark with a 2-out 2-run home run in the 9th inning to lift the Marauders to a 5-4 win.

The Marauders played the game as the visiting team on the scoreboard while hosting a pair of games originally scheduled to be played in Aberdeen, SD. Field conditions at the Wolves home field necessitated moving the games to Bismarck, ND. Taking advantage of a pair of home games, UMary closed in on teams ahead of the Marauders in the NSIC standings and keeping hopes for postseason play alive.

GAME ONE | University of Mary 16 Northern State University 3
Jonathan Draheim set a school record for wins in a career and Cal James broke the career mark for runs scored as the Marauders routed the Wolves to open the midweek doubleheader.

Draheim survived a bases-loaded situation in the bottom of the first inning to keep the game scoreless. The senior righthander found his groove in the second inning before allowing the first of the only two runs he allowed in the game in the third inning. The Jordan, MN, native limited the Wolves to one more run on three hits in the final three innings of the game. In six innings he held Northern State to six hits and one walk while striking out six batters.

James set the program record for runs scored in the 5th inning. After scoring on a throwing error in the third to tie Andy Leer with 132 career runs scored, James broke the mark in the 5th inning when he crossed the plate on a Krece Papierski home run. In the midst of a dominating streak the junior third baseman was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and four RBIs with a double. James is now one shy of the school career record for doubles with 43, one behind Tyler Liffrig.

PIVOT POINT
After claiming a lead on a Josh Walker second inning solo home run, scoring three unearned runs in the third and two more on a James double in the 4th, the Marauders took charge of the game with a 9-run fifth inning. Zach Hull opened the floodgates with a solo home run. A Wolves error added two more runs before James hit a 2-run single. Papierski capped the inning with a 2-run home run.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
STAT OF THE DAY
Jonathan Draheim is now the Marauders leader in wins (16) and starts (39), is tied for the career mark in shutouts (3), is second in strikeouts (173) and innings (221.2), and third in complete games (9).

GAME 2 | UMary 5 NSU 4
Taking advantage of an outstanding start by Paxton Miller and a strong relief outing by Jaxon Zanolli, the Marauders bided their time before Kalem Haney completed the UMary rally with a 2-run 2-out home run in the top of the ninth inning.

Locked in a pitchers duel with the Wolves Cooper Tessendorf, who was making his first collegiate start, Miller kept the game scoreless until Northern State scored on a wild pitch in the fourth inning. The Wolves tacked on a pair of unearned runs in the sixth inning. Zanolli came aboard with two out in the sixth inning and retired the first batter he faced on a ground out to end the inning.

The Marauders found their offensive voice in the seventh inning after the Wolves turned to the bullpen. One out singles by Kyle Jameson and Cal James brough All-NSIC first baseman Derek Shoen to the plate and the Truman, MN, native delivered a long home run to deep right field to toe the game 3-3. The home run was the 11th of the season for Shoen, just three off the single season record of 14 he set last season. He and Noah Hull are tied for the season lead.

Zaniolli then came back to punch out the first two batters he faced on the way to pitching a scoreless seventh inning.

PIVOT POINT
The Wolves regained the lead in the bottom of the 8th inning on a run-scoring double by catcher Nico Pezonella, setting up a dramatic ninth inning for the Marauders.

Josh Walker walked to start the 9th inning but was immediately eliminated of the basepaths as the Wolves turned a 5-4-3 double play to greatly dim the Marauders chances. But with an out remaining, pinch hitter Will Brassil singled to right field on a 2-2 pitch to bring hope to the home team. Haney then delivered one of the Marauders biggest blasts of the season as he deposited a 1-1 offering deep over the wall in right field for a 5-4 UMary. It was the second home run of the season for the freshman second baseman.

Mark Schommer came aboard in the ninth. After striking out the first batter of the inning and walking the second, he induced a pair of ground balls to Michael Polson at short for the final two outs of the inning, including a bad-hop rocket shot by Karson Hesser that Polson snared and fired to Shoen at first base for the second out of the inning.
