Strong Pitching leads Marauders to split with Wolves

ABERDEEN, SD - Tough pitching and late-inning perseverance earned the University of Mary Softball team a series split Tuesday against Northern State University, dropping game one 1-2 and taking game two 4-2. Kaylee Kannegiesser and Francesca Villaneda each collected three hits on the day and Emari Evans gave up no earned runs for her second win in four days.

GAME ONE

Game one ended in a pitcher's dual with the Marauders (7-36, 2-22 NSIC) coming up just a run short to the Wolves (14-30, 8-16 NSIC) 2-1.

The Wolves gained an early lead thanks to a 2-RBI single from Kyra Knudtson in the first.

Nicole Eckhardt would pitch the rest of the game without allowing another run. The junior from Cornelius, OR finished with 6.0 innings pitched, 4 strikeouts, 2 walks, and 7 hits given up.

Devyn Ritz helped orchestrate the Marauders lone run of the game in the sixth, scoring Kaylee Kannegiesser on a single into center field.

Lexi Chase finished the game giving up that lone run, earning the win with a 2-1 final score and striking out 6, allowing only 3 hits.

GAME TWO

Emari Evans looked strong in the circle, picking up her first complete game win in 8 innings leading UMary to a 4-2 win over Northern State.

Evans' only two runs given up were both unearned in the 3rd inning. The redshirt sophomore from Surprise, AZ finished with 5 strikeouts, 7 hits and no walks.

The Marauders got out to the first lead with Brooke McClure hitting a sacrifice fly to center in the 2nd. Janelle Bergmann later plated McKenzie Reinhardt on an RBI single to left in the third, giving UMary a 2-0 lead.

After the Wolves two-spot in the bottom of the third, Evans and Abby Rux were deadlocked in a pitcher's dual until the end of regulation still knotted at 2-2.

UMary wasted no time getting run support in extras as Brooke McClure brought home Madison Wszolek as the go-ahead run on an RBI single. Morgan Diedrich followed the next at-bat with a sacrifice fly to right scoring McClure as insurance.

Emari Evans left a runner stranded to slam the door shut for a 4-2 final score and the win. The Marauders finished the game outhitting the Wolves 10 team hits to 7, and committed 2 fewer errors.
