ST. CLOUD, MN – Continuing his assault on opposing pitchers, the University of Mary's
Cal James extended his incredible hot streak with two more home runs to open a weekend series at St. Cloud State University. Despite the best efforts of James, the Huskies would sweep the Northern Sun doubleheader from the Marauders.
James extended his hit streak to eight straight games. In that span he has hit seven home runs with 13 RBIs and 10 runs scored while going 14-for-22 at the plate.
GAME 1 | St. Cloud State University 13 University of Mary 2
A pair of 5-run innings by St. Cloud State was a little too much for the University of Mary to overcome in the opening game of the Northern Sun doubleheader. The Marauders were limited to four hits by starter Luke Tupy and a pair of relief pitchers. Tupy struck out nine and didn't allow a walk.
James was one of four Marauders with a hit in the game, finishing 1-for-3 with a run scored.
Noah Hull and
Krece Papierski also went 1-for-3 with Hull scoring a run and hitting a double. Papierski drove in both James and Hull with a 4
th inning single.
Sam Riola led the Huskies with a 3-hit day, scoring twice and driving in five with a pair of home runs.
GAME 2 | Huskies 6 Marauders 5
Despite James hitting two home runs for the second time in five games, the Marauders were unable to gain a split. The contest featured three ties and four lead changes between UMary and SCSU.
James gave the Marauders a quick 1-0 lead in the first on a solo home run. After the Huskies crossed the plate twice in the second and once in the third, the Marauders fought back with a solo home run by
Kyle Jameson before James bashed a 2-run shot in the 3
rd for a 4-3 UMary lead. Down a run in the 7
th, UMary again pulled even on a Jameson sacrifice fly in the 7
th.
The Huskies quickly retook the lead in the home half of the 7
th, scoring on a run-scoring groundout by Tyler Schiller for a 6-5 lead.
James finished the game 2-for-3 with both hits leaving the ballpark for home runs. He scored twice and drove in three runs. Jameson was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.
Sam Riola, who struck out nine UMary hitters for SCSU in six innings, went 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
The Marauders and the Huskies wrap up the weekend with a single 9-inning game on Monday, April 24. First pitch is 1 pm.
