Bats carry Marauders in final home series against Warriors

BISMARCK, ND - Though the bats heated up as the day carried on, the University of Mary Softball team fell 10-2 and 19-7 to Winona State University on Sunday at the Sanford Sports Complex.

GAME ONE
Winona State (33-12, 16-4 NSIC) showed off their conference prowess in the opening game, defeating UMary (6-35, 1-21 NSIC) 10-2.

Sariah Perez picked up where she left off Saturday, driving home Devyn Ritz on an RBI double to center field. Though she exited the game early, Perez finished the weekend going 6-9 at the plate with two home runs, a double, six runs batted in, and four runs scored.

Three home runs from Carly Engelhardt, Libby Neveau, and Macy Brodin all in the top of the third inning catapulted the Warriors ahead 10-1. Janelle Bergmann followed in the bottom of the third with an RBI double to left field to score Erin Murphy

Nicole Eckhardt would slow down the Warriors momentum through the fifth, but the Marauders could not gain any more run support, falling to the fifth inning eight-run rule and dropping game one to the Warriors 10-2.

Abby Smith pitched all five innings and struck out seven Marauders batters to pick up her 16th win on the year. Hannah Chambers was charged with the loss.

GAME TWO
Devyn Ritz paced the Marauders 11-hit nightcap going 3-3 with three RBIs. However, the Marauders ultimately came up short 19-7 to the Warriors.

After a six-spot in the top of the second, Francesca Villaneda reached on an error by the pitcher, scoring Ritz in the process for the Marauders first run of the game in the bottom of the second.

After Winona plated six more runs in the third, Devyn Ritz ripped an RBI double to right center to score Kaylee Kannegiesser for a 12-2 score. Abbie Hlas answered with a two-run homer in the top of the fourth.

In the bottom of the fourth, UMary embarked on an inspired comeback attempt. Mckenzie Reinhardt started it with a leadoff single to center field, her fifth hit of the weekend. Erin Murphy brought her home on an RBI double down the left field line.

True freshman Emily Schommer next brought Murphy home on an RBI single to left. Schommer later scored on an RBI single ripped down the right field line by Janelle Bergmann. Devyn Ritz capped off the Marauders big inning with a two-run double to right, making the score 14-7 at the end of the fourth.

The Warriors fired back with five more runs in the fifth, extending their lead to 19-7. Despite a Brooke De Jonge double in the fifth, this ended the game in the fifth with the same final score.
