Draheim leads record day for Marauders in split with Golden Eagles

Mandan, ND – Records were the theme of the day as the University of Mary baseball team earned a split with visiting University of Minnesota Crookston. Jonathan Draheim established a career record for starts and tied the Marauders career records for wins and shutouts as UMary broke the team single season record for home runs in an 8-0 victory in the opener. The Golden Eagles, who sit third in the Northern Sun standings and are receiving votes in the regional rankings, rebounded to capture game two 13-4.

The Marauders (15-22 overall, 8-14 NSIC) have taken one game in each series against the top four teams in the NSIC standings this season (Augustana, Minnesota State, UMC and Winona State) and are a combined 4-6 against that foursome. UMary has five series remaining in the regular season.

GAME 1 | University of Mary 8 University of Minnesota Crookston 0
Another dominant start by Jonathan Draheim has cemented the senior right-hander's name in the Marauders record book. The Jordan, MN, native threw his second straight complete game and limited a potent Golden Eagles (26-15, 16-7) attack to just five hits while striking out eight and didn't walk or hit a batter. The eight strikeouts is tied for the second-most in his career, only trailing the 12 punchouts he produced in his freshman year in 2019 against Southwest Minnesota State University.

Draheim is now the Marauders all-time leader in starts (38) and is tied with Ryan Astle for the most career wins with 15. He tied Astle and Dale Dingman for career shutouts with three. Draheim is now second in career strikeouts and third in innings pitched.

A Noah Hull solo blast deep over the right field wall established a new team season record in home runs with 52. UMary would add another three home runs on the day with a pair in each game – including one in each game by Cal James - to increase the UMary season total to 55 and break the record of 51 set last season.

PIVOT POINT
With Draheim dominating on the mound, the Marauders scored the only runs they needed in the second. Krece Papierski rocketed a leadoff double off the left field wall and scored on a 2-out single by Kyle Jameson. Kalem Haney followed with a single to center to place runners on the corners before Michael Polson doubled home Jameson with a ball to left center for a 2-0 lead.

STAT OF THE GAME
Jonathan Draheim had two perfect 1-2-3 innings, had two other innings where he only faced three batters (ended one inning on a pickoff, ended another on a double play) and never allowed more than one baserunner.

GAME 2 | Golden Eagles 13 Marauders 4
Cal James homered for the fourth straight game and fifth time in that span and Kalem Haney also cracked a round-tripper for the Marauders. UMary matched the UMC total of four extra base hits and hammered out ten hits total but the Marauders were unable to match a pair of explosive innings by the Golden Eagles.

Eight different Marauders had a hit in the game with josh Walker and Kyle Jameson posting a pair each.

PIVOT POINT
UMary opened the scoring with two runs in the third on a UMC defensive miscue and a Noah Hull single to score Derek Shoen. Held in check by Paxton Miller for three scoreless innings, the Golden Eagles responded with six runs in the top of the fourth, the last two runs scoring on a balk and a wild pitch. Kalem cracked a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth but UMary could never close the 3-run gap.
