WAYNE, NE – In a road doubleheader originally slated to be the University of Mary home opener, the Marauders picked up a split at Wayne State College. An impressive starting performance by
Jonathan Draheim in the opener carried UMary to a 5-2 win. The Wildcats responded with a 12-9 win in a second game that featured four lead changes.

The Marauders took advantage of another strong start by
Jonathan Draheim and a 4-run outburst in the fifth inning. Draheim picked up his second win of the season and the 13
th of his career with a six inning outing. The senior limited the Wildcats to two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out five. Draheim retired the first seven hitters he faced before an error in the third inning gave Wayne State their first baserunner.
Mark Schommer finished off the game with a scoreless seventh inning. After walking the first batter he faced, Schommer struck out the next two hitters on his way to earning his third save of the season.
PIVOT POINT
The Marauders broke a 1-1 tie with four runs in the fifth inning. Following one-out singles by
Kyle Jameson and
Kalem Haney, Micheal Polson scored both runners with a single. Martin followed with a double down the right field line to score Polson. Martin eventually scored on a
Cal James ground out to cap the UMary rally and push the Marauders into a 5-1 lead.

In a game that featured four lead changes, the Marauders were unable to hold off a late charge by the Wildcats. Led by a 3-hit effort from
Derek Shoen, the Marauders overcame a 4-1 deficit to take leads at 6-5 on a Shoen RBI single and a 9-8 advantage in the 6
th on a
Cal James 2-run single to right.
Shoen finished with two RBIs and a run scored.
Michael Polson and
Noah Hull also had multiple hits with Polson adding a long solo home run to left while Hull had both a double and a triple in the game.
PIVOT POINT
After taking a 9-8 lead, Wayne State pitching held UMary scoreless the remained of the game with Braden Cannon pitching a scoreless 8
th and 9
th innings. The Wildcats tied the game in the 8
th inning on a UMary error and scored the go-ahead run when Cannon was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in the winning run. The Wildcats sealed the win on an RBI double by Hunter Babe – his 6
th hit of the game – and a Quinn McCafferty triple to drive in the final run.

UMary and Minnesota State will play a doubleheader on Saturday, April 1, starting at 3 pm at the Pete Chapman Complex on the Wayne State campus before finishing with a 6:30 pm game at Hank Overlain Field. The Marauders and the Mavericks return to the Pete Chapman Complex for a 12 noon game on Sunday, April 2.
