Marauders clinch early victory over Mustangs

MARSHALL, MN - The University of Mary tennis team (6-5, 5-2 NSIC) earned their fifth conference win in convincing fashion Sunday morning. The Marauders defeated Southwest Minnesota State University (3-12, 2-4 NSIC) clinching the match early 4-0. 

"Glad to see our athletes competed with energy early this morning," said head coach Vida Saliendra. "Our athletes were sharp and placed shots very well." 

The Marauders started strong by sweeping the doubles matchups. Doaa Farouk Mohamed and Hala Hossam Awad dominated #2 doubles 6-1 while Emily Needham and Samantha Purpura won #3 doubles 6-3. Chloe Chong and Ilona Freitag led 5-3 in #1 doubles. 

Hala Hossam Awad gave the Marauders their first singles victory 6-0, 6-1 in #4 singles over Camila Paccieri. 

Ilona Freitag followed shortly after with another impressive victory 6-1, 6-1 in #3 singles over Gabriela Almeida.

Doaa Farouk Mohamed clinched the match for UMary in the #2 singles matchup, closing a solid weekend with a 6-1, 6-2 over Joana Reis Indio. 

Chloe Chong and Emily Needham finished ahead in their #1 and #5 singles matchups. 

UP NEXT
UMary Tennis will go back on the road April 1-2 to Grand Forks, ND. The Marauders will face Bemidji State University (2-11, 1-6 NSIC) next Saturday at 3 pm, and then the University of Minnesota Crookston (7-5, 2-4 NSIC) next Sunday at 9 am.
