MANDAN, ND – A fast start by the University of Mary in doubles play carried over to singles action as the Marauders edged past visiting University of Sioux Falls 4-3. With the win in a match delayed a day by poor travel conditions in the region, the Marauders remain undefeated in Northern Sun action.
"This was a tough match but our team pulled through," said Marauders head coach Vida Saliendra. "It was a competitive match filled with long points. I was glad to see our athletes compete for every point."
The Marauders claimed the doubles team point with a pair of wins.
Chloe Chong and
Ilona Freitag won by a decisive score of 6-1 in the #1 doubles match.
Emily Needham and
Samantha Purpura soon followed with a 6-3 win at #3 doubles.
Doaa Farouk Mohamed brought home the first singles win of the night for UMary. Named the NSIC Player of the Week for her efforts the first week of the season, Mohamed dominated the #2 singles matchup with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Danielle Thorfinnson.
In short order
Hala Hossam Awad finished with a 6-0, 6-2 win at #4 singles over Ella Hancock.
Chong followed her doubles effort with an impressive win at #1 singles. The sophomore posted a straight set 6-0, 6-2 win over Talia Janos of the Cougars to seal the win for the Marauders.
The other three singles matches went to extra points and in all three the Cougars were able to pull out wins.
The Marauders (5-3, 4-0 NSIC) conclude their final home weekend of the season against #11 Augustana at 9 am on Monday, March 20.
