Awad leads Marauders efforts against #11 Vikings

MANDAN, ND – Hala Hossam Awad continued her impressive freshman season with the lone win for the University of Mary in the Marauders 4-1 home loss to #11 Augustana. Awad has yet to lose in singles this season against NCAA Division II competition.

Playing #4 singles for the Marauders, Awad earned a straight set win over Augustana's Gabriela Jancikova. After taking the first set 6-4, the native of Cairo, Egypt, finished the win after taking set two 6-1.

Awad is now 8-1 overall in singles play, including a 4-0 mark in the Northern Sun. Her lone loss of the season came against NCAA Division I University of Oakland.

"I'm proud of my athletes' performance as we played the toughest team in our conference," said Marauders head coach Vida Saliendra. "After playing a tough match last night we found the energy to compete early this morning."

Augustana (10-3 overall, 5-0 NSIC), which has won 144 straight Northern Sun matches, swept all three doubles matches to earn the first team point of the morning.

The match was halted after Augustana had clinched the match after claiming wins at #6, #5 and #3 singles.

The Marauders (5-4, 4-1 NSIC), with strong performances up and down the lineup, were in position to force the #1 and #2 singles matches into extra points. Chloe Chong was up 5-4 in the second set of #1 singles after she was edged 6-2 in the opening set. In #2 singles, Doaa Farouk Mohamed lost set one 7-6 (7-5) in a tiebreaker and was even 1-1 in set two.

UMary next faces Minnesota State University on Saturday, March 25, and Southwest Minnesota State University on Sunday, March 26. Both NSIC matches will be played in St. Peter MN. UMary and Minnesota State are currently tied for second in the NSIC.
