CROOKSTON, MN –
Andrew Huber keyed an explosive third period for #1 University of Mary as the Marauders opened their final series of the regular season with a 4-0 road win over #18 University of Minnesota Crookston. Huber posted both a goal and an assist as the Marauders broke open a scoreless contest with four goals in the third period.
With UMary goaltender
Conan Hayton and UMC's Wyatt Olsonawski holding both offenses at bay through the first two periods, the Marauders finally lit the lamp at 6:33 of the third period.
Controlling the puck on the boards to the right of the net,
Seth Cushing waited for
Garrett Freeman to come open in the slot. Taking a perfect feed from Cushing, Freeman buried a shot past Olsonawski into the back of the net for his 11
th goal of the season.
Just 59 seconds later the Marauders doubled their lead to 2-0. Holding his positioning in the middle of the slot, Huber took a pass from the left boards by
Cyril Nagurski and ripped a one-timer into the net for an insurance goal.
Derek Dropik added a goal at 15:42 to seal the win for UMary. Standing in the slot Huber redirected a hard pass from
Johnny Witzke from atop the left point towards the net. After an initial save, Dropik picked up a loose puck on the left side of the crease and put a backhand shot into the net.
Caleb Petrie closed out the scoring with 37 seconds left in the game when he corralled a long rebound of an
Alex Flicek shot to the right side of the goal and sent a shot into a wide open net.
Hayton finished with 29 saves in the game to earn his third shutout of the season. He posted 13 saves in the first before needing to make four in the second. He added another 11 shots in a decisive third period.
Olsonawski had 31 saves for UMC.
