MINOT, ND - The University of Mary Softball team (1-2) ended their stay at the Minot Dome Tournament on a high note Sunday morning.
Nicole Eckhardt pitched a complete game gem and an explosive 5th inning at the plate gave UMary a 6-1 win over Carroll College (1-2).
Eckhardt started the game strong, throwing four strikeouts and allowing only one hit through three scoreless innings. The Saints jumped on the board first when Jessica Nimmo led off the top of the fourth inning with a solo home run to left field.
The Marauders answered back in the bottom of the fifth inning. With two runners on first and second,
Erin Murphy tied the game with an RBI double to the left-center gap.
Kaylee Kannegiesser followed up two pitches later, bringing home
Brooke De Jonge on an RBI single to center field to give UMary the 2-1 lead.
Smart baserunning and a pair of fielder's choices would later score Murphy and Kannegiesser. The Marauders rally continued with two outs as
Madison Wszolek sent a frozen rope to the fence in left-center for an RBI double.
Francesca Villaneda followed with a battle at the plate, sending a two-strike offspeed pitch the other way for an RBI single and a 6-1 lead.
With a six-run lead at her back, Eckhardt shut the Carroll bats down through her next two frames. Eckhardt forced three groundouts on seven pitches in the sixth inning, and retired the Saints in four batters to slam the door shut in the seventh.
Eckhardt was lights out in her first win on the season in a complete game, pitching six strikeouts in seven innings while only allowing one earned run, four hits, and walking only one batter. The loss was charged to Abby Hanley.
