Marauders get early NSIC preview with non-conference games versus Huskies, Bulldogs

ST. CLOUD, MN - The University of Mary Softball team got another early NSIC preview Saturday at day one of the Kelly Laas Invitational. The Marauders (1-4) fell 12-0 in game one to St. Cloud State (1-1) and 13-2 in game two to Minnesota Duluth (5-0).

GAME ONE
St. Cloud State's pitcher Trinity Junker was the star of game one, throwing a perfect game as the Huskies defeated the Marauders (1-3) 12-0 in five innings in their opening game of the season.

The Huskies chipped away offensively putting up runs in each of their four innings at the plate. A 2-RBI single by Jasmin Estrada opened the scoring in the first inning, followed by a 2-RBI triple by Holly Weinberger to the Huskies a comfortable lead. Estrada and Weinberger did more damage later and Sydney Trees also put up a bases-clearing double for 3 RBIs.

Nicole Eckhardt was tagged with the loss, giving up 7 earned runs, striking out 2, and walking 2 other batters.

GAME TWO
A slow start in the field would hinder the Marauders momentum in game two as they would fall to Minnesota Duluth 13-2.

The Bulldogs jumped on the board fast with an 11-run first inning. Reigning NDPF Athlete of the Week Madison Wszolek led off the second inning with an infield single. Brooke McClure followed with a walk and Brooke De Jonge next brought Wszolek home to score on a sacrifice fly. Morgan Diedrich then brought McClure home on an RBI groundout to complete a 2-run second inning for the Marauders.

Nicole Eckhardt did a solid job in relief for the Marauders, limiting the Bulldog batters to just two more runs through the next three innings. However, UMary could not muster any further success at the dish, ultimately falling 13-2 to Duluth.

Lauren Dixon picked up the complete game win with 6 strikeouts and only one walk in the five inning contest. Hannah Chambers was charged with the loss, giving up 8 runs and walking five batters.

UP NEXT
UMary Softball returns to the Kelly Laas Invitational for two more games Sunday, February 12. The Marauders play St. Cloud State again at 10 am followed by a 12:30 slated first-pitch with Bemidji State.
