MINOT, ND - The University of Mary Softball team (0-2) showed great signs on opening day for what they're capable of at the plate this season. Though they scored 18 runs on 23 total hits through 12 innings, the Marauders fell 17-6 in game one versus Minot State University (1-0) and later 17-12 to Valley City State University (1-0) in game two on Saturday.
GAME ONE
Though she would be left stranded,
Sariah Perez fired up the Marauders dugout with a two-out triple to right-center in the first frame.
UMary entered the top of the second trailing 1-0.
Devyn Ritz drew a leadoff full-count walk and would later advance to second on a sacrifice bunt from
Madison Wszolek. Two batters later,
Kaylee Kannegiesser ripped the ball to the left-center gap, scoring Ritz and tying the game with an RBI double.
The Beavers answered big in the bottom of the second, yielding 13 runs.
With the bases loaded in the top of the third,
Devyn Ritz drove in
Erin Murphy from third on a line drive shot back up the middle. Abby Lohse was able to throw
Ariana Retuta out at the plate as she tried to score from second on the play.
Madison Wszolek next drove in
Sariah Perez with an infield single.
Later trailing 17-3 in the fifth,
Sariah Perez led off with her third base hit of the day on a line drive to the right side. After Ritz singled on a line drive to left two batters later,
Madison Wszolek crushed a three-run homer to right-center.
Brooke McClure singled in the next at-bat but would be left stranded after Reegan Floyd chucked her fifth strikeout to end the game 17-6 in the fifth inning.
Reegan Floyd picked up the win with 5 strikeouts, 2 walks, and 4 earned runs in what was also Minot State's season opener.
Emari Evans was charged with the loss.

GAME TWO
A brief break followed the first game of the day, but the Marauders bats stayed hot in their matchup with Valley City State University. Trailing 1-0 in the top of the second,
Brooke De Jonge cranked a big three-run homer to dead center, scoring
Devyn Ritz and
Brooke McClure to UMary ahead of Valley City State 3-1.
After two scoreless frames, the Vikings would answer back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the third to retake the lead 4-3.
The Marauders would load the bases with only one out in the fourth when
Ariana Retuta cracked a line drive up the middle to tie the game back up.
Natasha Stubbs put UMary back in front with an RBI single to left, and
Erin Murphy added another run on a fielder's choice.
With just one out,
Kaylee Kannegiesser cleared the bases with a 3-RBI triple to the wall in right-center.
Sariah Perez brought Kannegiesser home just two pitches later with an RBI single to left field.
Brooke McClure capped off the 4th-inning rally for the Marauders by driving in Perez with an RBI single up the middle.
After UMary's 8-run 4th inning, the slugfest continued as the Vikings answered with 8 runs of their own in the bottom of the 4th, and later would extend their lead to 14-11 in the 5th.
After the Vikings tallied 3 more runs in the 6th inning to go up 17-11,
Francesca Villaneda crushed a ground-rule double down the line in right field. Back-to-back walks would load the bases for
Sariah Perez who brought home one more run on a sacrifice fly to center. A groundout would end it for the Marauders in the 7th as they fell to the Vikings 17-12.
Joelle Lamon earned the win for VCSU and Brooke Gaudr earned the save through three innings of work, holding UMary to just one run and one hit.
Emari Evans was charged with another loss.
