EDMOND, OK –
Daniel Martin cracked a pair of extra base hits and drove in four runs to push visiting University of Mary to an early lead but the Marauders didn't have an answer for a late charge by the University of Central Oklahoma. The Bronchos scored the final 13 runs of the game to defeat the Marauders 16-6 and win the last three games of the 4-game series.
Martin homered and doubled to drive in two runs and score three times in his Marauders debut in the season opener on Friday, a 10-4 win over the Bronchos. The transfer from the University of New Mexico hoped another big game would lift UMary to a weekend split.
For the second time this season, Martin had both a double and a home run against the Bronchos. He drove in a season-high four runs and scored three times, the second time he has done so.
Martin put the Marauders (1-3 overall) on the board first. After reaching on an error and taking third base on a
Derek Shoen double, Martin scored on a wild pitch for a quick 1-0 lead. The lead was short-lived as Central Oklahoma (7-1 overall) pulled even with a single run in the bottom of the inning.
Back to back run-scoring doubles by Martin and Shoen in the second game the Marauders a 3-1 lead, but once again the Bronchos immediately tied the game with a pair of runs of their own.
A 3-run blast by Martin in the fourth – his second home run of the season – propelled the Marauders to a 6-3 lead. The Bronchos didn't immediately pull even, but a single run in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the sixth evened the game.
Central Oklahoma took control in the seventh with a 6-run outburst before finishing the game early with four more runs in the eighth inning.
Seven Marauders combined for ten hits with three posting a pair apiece.
Michael Polson finished 2-for-5 with a double and two runs scored.
Derek Shoen doubled twice and drove in a run.
Leadoff hitter Kaleb Glass was 4-for-6 with four runs scored and three RBIs to lead a Bronchos attack that totaled 16 hits. Aiden Proctor both scored and drove in three runs.
The Marauders continue their season-opening road trip with a visit to Southern Nazarene in Bethany, OK, for a doubleheader on Tuesday, February 14. Game time is 12 noon.
