BEMIDJI, MN – Strong performances from Lexie Schneider and Megan Zander carried the University of Mary women's basketball team to a decisive 72-59 victory over Bemidji State University.
Recording her sixth double-double of the season, Schneider scored 20 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. The Appleton, WI, native shot 9-of-13 from the field and made both of her free throws.
Zander had a great all-around game as she scored 20 points while recording eight rebounds and dishing out five assists. The Mandan, ND, native shot 8-of-14 from the field and 3-of-6 from behind the arc. She also had three steals.
Mariah McKeever dropped 11 points on 5-of-10 shooting and made her only three-point attempt.
Ryleigh Wacha scored six points and grabbed six rebounds. Coming off the bench for the Marauders,
Moriku Hakim had seven points and four rebounds, while
Zoe Velde had six points and three assists.
UMary (6-6, 4-2 Northern Sun) jumped out to a 14-6 lead in the first quarter due to a stifling Marauders defense. UMary then extended its lead to 34-22 going into halftime. Schneider had 12 points and six rebounds in the second quarter.
The Beavers (2-6, 0-5 NSIC) cut into the Marauders lead in the third quarter, outscoring UMary by three points. The Marauders were able to step up in the fourth quarter and cruised to a 72-59 victory over the Beavers.
UMary shot 48.3% from the field while going 4-of-13 from the three-point line. BSU recorded a 42.6 shooting percentage from the field while going 4-18 from behind the arc.
The Marauders struggled from the free throw line, going 10-of-20, while the Beavers shot 9-of-11 from the charity stripe. UMary dominated the glass, outrebounding BSU 42-28. UMary led for over 37 minutes and never trailed the entire game.
UMary returns home to the McDowell Activity Center to host Dickinson State University on Saturday, December 16, at 4 pm, and Valley City State University on Monday, December 18, at 7:30 pm.
