Total team effort propels Marauders past Lions to open Dakotah Bank Classic

ABERDEEN, SD - It was a total team effort for the University of Mary men's basketball team with six Marauders scoring double figures to kick off the Dacotah Bank Classic in a 110-73 victory over Trinity Bible College.

Brock Heffner got the Marauders off to a hot start, scoring a team-high 18 points in the first half. Heffner was 8-for-12 from the field and also seven rebounds in only 16 minutes of action. Fellow starter Xavier Lewis dropped 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the field while also collecting six rebounds.

UMary got great production from its bench unit, with four Marauders scoring double figures. Sophomore forward Ty Rodgers recorded a double-double off the bench with 13 points and 11 rebounds on 5-of-6 shooting. Sophomore guard Marquel Saleek led the bench unit with 16 points. Liam Dougherty added 10 points and five rebounds. Nick Harrell hit all three of his shots – including a trey – and finished with 10 points. 

Additionally Alex Mattes was 3-for-4 from behind the arc to post nine points.

The Marauders caught fire to start the game, jumping out to a 13-2 lead within the first four minutes of action. UMary kept shooting the lights out as the Marauders held a 52-34 advantage over the Lions going into intermission. 

UMary continued its excellent play in the second half, outscoring TBC 58-39 to claim a 110-73 victory.

The Marauders shot a scorching 56 percent from the field while holding the Lions to 44 percent. UMary dominated the glass, outrebounding TBC 51-24. The Marauders showed improvement at the free throw line, shooting 9-of-12 from the charity stripe. 

UMary next wraps up the Dacotah Bank Classic, taking on Peru State College on Saturday, November 25, at 1 pm in Aberdeen, SD.
