Heartbreak in home opener for Marauders in late loss to Yellow Jackets

Bismarck, ND -In a tightly contested battle, the University of Mary Marauders put up a valiant effort against Black Hills State University before falling just short 58-56. The Marauders, who held control for a significant portion of the game, wasn't able to clinch the win in the end of an intense and nail-biting matchup.
 
Individual performances played a crucial role in the game, and several players stood out for their contributions on the court for the Marauders (2-4 overall).
 
In her first home appearance at the McDowell Activity Center, Mariah McKeever delivered a stellar performance, playing for 35 minutes and showcasing an impressive 61.5% field goal accuracy. Her proficiency in three-point shots was a highlight, making 5-of-6 behind the arc to contribute significantly to the UMary offensive efforts. With 21 points, five rebounds, and four steals, McKeever played a key role in keeping the Marauders in the game.
 
Megan Zander was a force on the court. In 30 minutes of playing time she secured 11 points and nine rebounds. Her ability to contribute both offensively and defensively was crucial for the Marauders. Zander's 41.7% field goal accuracy and three assists added versatility to the team's play.
 
Lexie Schneider's performance in the forward position stood out with 17 points as she hit 6-of-11 shots from the floor and made all five free throws to add crucial points to the scoreboard. Schneider's dominance on the boards with 13 rebounds showcased her all-around capabilities on the court. This was her second double double in six games this season.
 
Morgan Hammerback led BHSU (1-0) with 21 points and eight rebounds.
 
In a game that went down to the wire and featured five lead changes in the last three minutes of play, the Marauders displayed commendable effort and resilience. While the team couldn't secure the win, the individual performances of players like McKeever, Zander, and Schneider demonstrated their determination and skill. This narrow loss will undoubtedly serve as a learning opportunity for the UMary Women's Basketball team as they regroup for future challenges in the season.
 
The next upcoming challenge comes at home against Northern State University on Tuesday, November 21. Also the Northern Sun opener, tip off is 7:30 pm at the McDowell Activity Center.
